Headless Audio Controller Setup

What we built

• Embedded firmware that exposes a temporary access point for first time setup, then joins the home network on 2.4 GHz for range and compatibility.
• Device discovery using local discovery protocols so the app can find the controller on the network without cloud sign in.
• Setup app for iOS and Android that connects to the temporary SSID, collects Wi‑Fi credentials, returns the phone to home Wi‑Fi, and confirms device online.
• Speaker pairing for selecting a target wireless speaker room and binding the controller to it. Group volume is respected when rooms are grouped.
• Update path for over the air firmware and app level improvements.

Architecture

• Provisioning step with device in SoftAP mode broadcasts a unique SSID. The app joins, sends credentials, and triggers a reboot to join home Wi‑Fi.
• After join, the controller advertises itself on the LAN. The app verifies IP and health, then lets the user select a speaker room to control.
• Control path uses the speaker system APIs exposed on the local network where available.
• Low power states and LED feedback avoid battery drain when wall mounted on metal surfaces.

Design choices are aligned with consumer setup patterns for headless devices and household speakers.

Results

• First time setup fits in a short, predictable flow that most users complete in a few minutes.
• Reliable discovery and pairing on typical home networks.
• Minimal ongoing maintenance. Updates and reconfiguration are simple.

Names and brand references are left out by design.
